More Keyboard fun

When you are using Safari on iOS you get to use yet another keyboard which has my favorite, revealing the .com, .org, or .net when you press and hold the period. Again this keyboard is context sensitive, and shows up in Safari or other times when you enter an interface that uses web conventions. What makes it frustrating is understanding “context” and the inability to override the programmers desired keyboard. For example I prefer the Safari keyboard, but I can't switch to it using the keyboard switching key (that globe icon in the lower left of your iPhone 😀 which is available only if you have already enabled an additional keyboard(s).

In Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.

Here you can select Emoji (smiley faces and hundreds of other little dingbat characters that people love to hate). You can also select international keyboards for language specific typing. However, you can't select the "Safari" keyboard, but you can select many foreign language keyboards, or the ten-key numeric only keypad.

One thing that's kinda interesting for grammar geeks, is that the while the Safari keyboard has the .com domain suffix under the period, the regular keyboard has an awesome ellipses (…) which I use all the time. Because of my publishing, editing and writing background I'm one of 19 people in the universe who know that the dot dot dot (ellipses) is actually ONE character and not three periods in succession (or four or more—there is no such things as EMPHASIS on an ellipses, just one ellipses which is three dots). I'm a geek that way. And while I pride myself on this knowledge, if I am in a Safari keyboard, the period only shows the .com choices and not my ellipses. Bummer.
